Installing A Pond In Griggs County, North Dakota: Things To Ask Your Pond Installer

Why would you build a pond? There are actually several reasons. Some people build a pond, stock it with fish and then catch them. Some people just enjoy sitting outside near a quiet pond to think. No matter what the reason and no matter what the size, it is very important to remember that installing a pond is a very big undertaking and can be very easily fouled up if not installed correctly. There is more to building a pond than just digging a hole (a very big hole at that) and filling it with water. A pond is actually a very complex system that must be started the right way and then maintained correctly. Why hire a professional? The time, the effort and the equipment for starters.

The Equipment that you might need for a pond:

  • The amount of dirt that you must move for a pond, even a small one is staggering
  • You will need a backhoe or a little dozer to get this job done quickly and efficiently.
  • You will also need a lot of heavy black plastic sheeting which will form the bottom and sides of the pond, kind of like a pool liner only more freeform.
  • You will need an experienced and trained crew (not technically equipment)
  • You will need a heavy duty truck for hauling equipment and materials
  • A truck to haul in the water for the pond

Getting the system started:

  • After choosing the size, shape and depth of your pond, it will be dug out and much of the dirt removed.
  • The sides and bottom will be smoothed and cleared of any large rocks or debris and raked and tamped smooth.
  • The sheeting will be put into place and weighted down at the top so that it does not fall in.
  • The pumping system will be put into place and hooked up. All tubing, wires and other items will be hidden with rocks and plants.
  • The water will be put into the pond and the pump kicked on
  • The water will be treated and allowed to circulate for the required amount of time before fish, turtles or water plants are brought in.
  • The pond should be monitored for signs of dead or dying fish to make sure that it is doing well. The fish should be artificially fed until there are enough fish species established to ensure proper breeding.
